Approved Filler – Calculations (ONL)

ABOUT THE COURSE

Refrigerant calculations involve determining the correct amount of refrigerant needed for a system, ensuring optimal performance and safety.
This calculations course is intended as a refresher for HVAC&R technicians and as a supplement to any Approved Filler course.
It provides examples of calculations for you to learn and refresh, learning tools, and an instructional video so that you can revise this knowledge prior to an Approved Filler course.

This course is designed for

  • Experienced HVAC&R Technicians seeking a refresher to reinforce their knowledge and stay current with industry practices.

  • Learners new to HVAC&R looking for a structured supplementary resource to support their training.

  • Anyone interested in refrigerant calculations, including professionals and students aiming to build a solid understanding of thermodynamic principles and practical applications in the HVAC&R field.

Delivery method and duration

This course is delivered online. You can practice the Fillers Calculations test as many times as you’d like, with a fresh set of random questions each time.

Topics covered

Overfilling cylinders which exceeds the allowable weight/mass permissable, and working pressure can cause deformation and lead to the cylinder’s inability to withstand the working pressure and reduce its integrity. Overfilling compressed gas cylinders can lead to several risks of harming people, property and the environment such as:

  • Explosion of the cylinder due to mechanical damage, weakness, or over-pressurisation
  • Fragmentation of the metal cylinder upon explosion
  • Exposure to released gas, which may have harmful properties (asphyxiant, toxic, corrosive, flammable)
  • Cold burns

This course provides supplementary material such as:

  • Instructional video
  • Practice exercises
  • Reference guide
Registration

Approved Filler Calculations is an ongoing online course. Participants may start at any time and complete the course at their own pace. You will be sent a username and password to access the online course following registration and payment. Please allow for 48 hours to come through. Refer to our Privacy Policy and Terms and Conditions.

Prerequisites

There are no pre-requisites for this course.

RLNZ has been reviewing the results from both the A1 and A2/A2L theory components, practical assessments and gathering feedback from participants regarding their learning experiences and challenges related to cylinder calculations. The data collected has now shown that there is a lack of understanding of calculations methods and formulae and this short course helps to reinforce learning and provide additional support to those who may be struggling with the concept.
